[Unlike his protests, Rei's plea and his struggle not to cry do get Rin's attention, if only because it's relevant to his own interests, too-- and, all right, also because he doesn't want to make anyone cry. But if the others knew about what Rei tried to do, then they inevitably learn about this was all Rin's fault, to begin with, and he doesn't want anyone else in on just how stupid he is.
